Written by Emily Burch, Accredited Practising Dietitian and PhD candidate with Griffith University’s Healthy Primary Care team. Through her current research, Emily is working with Diabetes Australia towards improving the management of people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in Australia. Emily is investigating how diet quality changes over time after diagnosis with type 2 diabetes and the factors that influence these changes. We all know that fruits and vegetables are great for our bodies and are among the healthiest foods available for us to eat. This is because eating lots of fruits and vegetables protects us against a variety of diseases like diabetes, cancer and heart disease. Unfortunately, most people do not have home gardens capable of supplying fresh produce year-round. But is fresh produce always better than frozen produce? Not necessarily! LinkI buy frozen fruit and vegies. The only fresh food I buy is Potatoes. I enjoy my yogurt and buy a variety of berries frozen to go with it and one day a week have an avocado.

I buy bananas and other fruits fresh rather than frozen. Frozen veggies are good to have as they last longer than fresh. I do buy lettuce and tomatoes in the winter months. Summer I can grow them.

Fresh IS better than frozen IF we lived in a perfect world. If we had access to our own gardens & had a wide variety. But that sadly is not the case. So the next one is being frozen.

Excluding things like bananas, oranges, lettuce, etc., we buy frozen.

Frozen most of the time, because fresh is expensive. Depending on the time of year some fresh produce is on sale.
