When Dog Shelter Makes Appeal for Homes as Temps Plummet Below Zero People Arrive in Droves. An animal shelter in Krakow was left without words after a weekend of action saw lines out of the door of people who came in to temporarily adopt a dog in the face of an onrushing cold front. Dubbed “Operation Frost,” the KTOZ Schronisko, or animal shelter, asked on Friday the 5th if anyone interested in adopting a dog could come in immediately as the weather over the first weekend of January was predicted to fall to -5°F. “Due to the fact that some of our animals live in kennels, we urgently need to make room for them in a closed pavilion,” the shelter wrote on Facebook, according to a proprietary translation from Polish. What a beautiful story. Animals often suffer in the cold so it is good they have a warm place when the temperatures plummet.

Makes me so angry when people say 'They are animals, they are used to the cold.' I tell them "Oh yeah, put on a coat with no hat, gloves or shoes and sit outside when it's 10F see how YOU feel.

Lovely story of kind people doing what is needed and right for vulnerable and defenceless animals. Thank you, Joy.

Next few days here are going to be brutal for all our strays outside. They have heated houses under our sunroom and heated water bowls. But the highs will be in the negative numbers and wind chills will be -36F to -40F. Can food freezes in like 10 minutes. I make a 'Cat' soup but even that freezes in the heated bowls. So they will have to survive on dry food and stay hunkered down. Thankfully we do have enough houses for them.

Beckie the animals are so lucky to have kind people like you and Nick. It is a credit to you both. A person like me finds it so hard to imagine it being that cold. Bet you get lots of hugs from the animals.
